Induction – New Teachers

The induction process for new teachers comprises two main elements:

  • a period of orientation to the school;
  • an advice and guidance programme for provisionally registered teachers comprising:
    • a programme of meetings aimed at familiarizing new teachers with the different aspects of being a teacher;
    • ongoing individual professional development tailored to the different needs of new teachers.


At the time of commencement an orientation day or days is held for new staff. The primary focus of orientation is:

  • to introduce new staff to key people, including support staff, in the school;
  • to provide new teachers with essential information about the running of the school, such as its physical layout and the people who work in it, as well as its philosophy, rules, routines, policies, and procedures.

The purpose of an orientation day is to enable teachers to “find their feet” and establish themselves in the school community as soon as possible. The orientation programme is delivered by one of the school’s assistant principals. New appointees will be contacted prior to their commencement and advised of when their orientation day will be.

Advice and Guidance Programme

This programme is to assist provisionally registered teachers to become fully registered. For beginning teachers this occurs over two years, for experienced teachers from overseas or those returning to teaching the term is much shorter. The components of the programme include:

  • A supervising teacher who is already fully registered;
  • Professional and personal support from colleagues and from your management committee or employer;
  • Observation and appraisal of your teaching by your supervising teacher
  • The opportunity to observe the work of other teachers
  • Professional discussions with colleagues focused on students’ learning;
  • Participating in appropriate courses and meetings, both informal and structured, within and outside of the school
  • A written record of your advice and guidance programme, including professional discussions and appraisal, with planning for further support and development.

In addition the school runs a programme of meetings for new teachers or overseas teachers geared towards expanding their knowledge of teaching. Meeting topics change each year depending on need, but might include:

  • Becoming fully registered – the process
  • Learning issues eg Maori education, gender issues, teaching in mixed ability classrooms
  • Student behaviour management
  • Appraisal
  • New Zealand Teacher code of Ethics
  • Writing reports and meeting parents at report nights
