Eye on Nature Wearable Arts Competition Winner

Year 9 student Raquel Sheldon has won the top prize in the Secondary category at the annual Eye on Nature Wearable Arts competition.
Students were challenged to design their garments around the theme: ‘Waste’. Raquel’s entry ‘Patched Angel’ captivated the judges with amazing craftsmanship and undeniable “WOW’ factor.
Featuring patchwork made from GIB tape, white plastic from CD cases on the vest, shiny black weed mat for the wings and skirt, and leg warmers crafted from sleeves of an old jacket, the outfit also incorporates a recycled pleather coat from an op shop. Raquel made every stitch using leftover yarn from another dress to showcase the garment’s sustainable and innovative design.
Raquel won $1000 prize money and the also a visit to Pukekohe High by Johanna Otto (J Otto), a costume artist who has previously worked on the Lord of the Rings TV series, for Wētā Workshop and on the Avatar 2 movie – an amazing opportunity for our kura. Raquel has a wonderfully generous and unassuming attitude and was so thrilled to be able to share the J Otto visit with other students so that they could also gain experience and knowledge. Raquel drew upon her mother’s advice in making her winning garment “work on what you love everyday”. Taking your mum’s advice has certainly worked for you Raquel, a fantastic achievement.
Raquel is participating in the Toi competition on Wednesday 28 June – we wish you the very best of luck!
