Cryptology is concerned with communicating and storing data in secret and secure forms. During times of war, this was useful for ensuring secrecy of written messages. Today the same principles can be used to secure digital data flowing between devices, to encrypt television signals or to verify identities in e-commerce. The explosion of communication methods in modern society makes this an important and fascinating area of mathematical research.
