RUGBY 7’s: Counties Manukau Secondary Schools U15 Rugby 7s
Over the past 8 weeks, our Junior boys and girls have trained to represent Pukekohe High School at the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools Rugby 7’s tournaments. With Rugby 7’s, another form of the rugby code, it is another avenue student athletes can head down being a part of the faster form of the game.
We have had 42 athletes within 3 teams (1 girls, 2 boys) training to play at these tournaments. The girls were involved in a 1-day tournament at Wesley College and the boys have been playing in a 3 week series at South Park, Papakura.
The girls team managed to get through the 1-day tournament and make the final vs Wesley College. Standout players on the day were Tyler Matthews, Manawa Kapetaua and Sarah Carpenter.
The girls team was coached by former student Rebecca Campbell and managed by Laura Abbott.
The 2 boys teams managed 6 games each over the 3 week series on Wednesday afternoons. The Red team won 4 and lost 2. The Gold team won 2 and lost 4.
Standout players for the Red team over the series were Devan Gardiner, Cohen Brady-Leathem and Tory Jones-Bruce.
Standout players for the Gold team over the series were Lochlan Brown, Logan McGlade and Trent McNaughten.
The boys Red team was coached by Shaun Atamu and Shey Eva and managed by Sharon Chitty. The boys Gold team was coached by Stephen Langdon and managed by Ellen McGlade.
Thank you to all the efforts of the student athletes, and constant support from the rugby committee, school, families and friends.
All the best to those who go forward and represent in the Condors Nationals Rugby 7’s tournament next week at Sacred Heart College to round out the rugby calendar for the year.
