Science student Anna McCarthy has recently been awarded the opportunity to attend the University of Canterbury’s Astronomy School later this year. Please read below the offer of acceptance from the University. Congratulations Anna.

On behalf of the College of Science and the School of Physical & Chemical Sciences, University of Canterbury I am pleased to inform you that your student Anna McCarthy has been awarded a place on the Elaine P. Snowden Astronomy School 2019. The applications were incredibly competitive and it was tough for the panel to select only 20 year 13 students from across the whole of Aotearoa.

Students will have the opportunity to contemplate the universe from UC’s Mount John Observatory in Tekapo for 2 nights and get a taste of university life on the university’s Ilam campus in Christchurch for 3 days. These days coincide with the New Zealand Institute of Physics bi-annual conference so there is an opportunity for students to listen in on some interesting talks and meet those in the field.

Past attendees have indicated that the opportunity to bond with like-minded students is beneficial and we hope this year’s students have similar meaningful and enriching experiences.
