Orientation

All new students will participate in an orientation programme before they start their classes.  In November of the year before our Year 9 students enter Pukekohe High School they are invited into the school to experience the variety of subjects at the school and to become acquainted with the school environment.  When they start their school year, Year 9’s participate in a Peer Support Programme in which senior students, with the help of house deans, counsellors and vertical form teachers, work with small groups of students to ensure that their transition into high school is a smooth one.  Parents are welcome to join their Year 9 student on both the orientation day and the first day at school.

Reporting to Parents

A full written report is prepared for all students twice a year - mid year and term 4.  Our goal is for the parents to be able to directly access their student’s learning records through the school-based website, Ultranet.

Academic Conferencing takes place twice a year and is an opportunity for parents, whanau, students and the school to work together to help students to reach their potential.  During a 20 minute conference a target plan is developed that helps every student reach their academic potential by personalising their learning. We believe that “Personalising learning is about students understanding what they know, how they know it and what they need to learn next.”

All parents and whanau will receive a personal letter of invitation. Dates and times of these conferences will be also published in the school newsletter and Franklin County News.

Parents are encouraged to contact the school at any time if information on their child's progress is required.

Newsletters

Newsletters are sent home with all students each fortnight.  Newsletters contain information about school issues and upcoming events as well as reports on individual and team achievements.  If for some reason you do not receive your copy of the newsletter, you could collect one from the school office or phone the school so that a copy can be sent home.  You may also view a copy of the newsletter on our school website: www.pukekohehigh.school.nz.  You can subscribe on the website to receive each newsletter as an email.

School Donation

This is a donation towards the funding of equipment and resources that allow us to provide a higher standard of education, the school magazine, and other cultural and recreational activities approved by the board.  The donation requested is kept to a minimum.

The school donation is:

One child: $125.00
More than one child: $125.00 for the eldest one at school and $100 for each other child

Some subjects require payment for materials that are not paid for by the government.  Details of subject fees will be provided at the time of enrolment and are contained in subject information material issued to students at the start of a course. Course costs are a separate item from the school donation.

Parents are asked to pay the school donation and subject fees on receipt of invoice. These can be paid by instalments or automatic payment.

Transport

Students living more than 4.8 km from school are entitled to use school transport.  We have a bus controller who is responsible for ensuring students know the correct bus on which to travel.  We appoint bus prefects who are responsible for safe behaviour on the bus.  School rules apply while students are travelling to and from school.  On arrival at school in the mornings, students must stay in the school grounds.

The following guidelines should be used when wearing mufti:

Leaving the School Grounds During the Day
During the school day no student, other than those in Year 13, may leave the school grounds without a pass.

ENROLMENT INFORMATION 2011
Pukekohe High School has a Ministry of Education approved enrolment scheme.  Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone.  Please see the separate map which has the boundaries identified.
In-Zone Applications 2011

Enrolments for in-zone students will be held in the school library on Tuesday 9 August, Wednesday 10 August, Monday 15 August from 4:30pm – 7:00pm and Saturday 13 August from 9:00am – 12:00pm.

There will be a team of people enrolling so no appointment time is needed.
Please bring to the enrolment interview:

•    Completed application to enrol form;
•    Proof of address e.g. telephone/electricity account;
•    Copy of student's birth certificate. If the student was not born in New Zealand,
     a copy of both the student and parents’ passport pages
     i.e. personal, visa and date of entry must accompany this application;
•    Choice of language form for Year 9

If you are unable to attend during the times stated above please complete the application to enrol form and send this form with proof of your residential address (telephone or electricity account) to the school office.  The Enrolment Officer will then contact you to arrange an interview time.  A student is confirmed as enrolled at Pukekohe High School only after an enrolment interview between the school, parent/guardian and student has been held, and after the completion and signing of an enrolment card.
Out-of-Zone Applications 2011

The deadline for out-of-zone applications will be published in the Franklin County News.
Out of zone students who are siblings of current students may enrol on the above dates.

The board has determined that only out-of-zone enrolments of siblings of current students will be accepted.

Annulment of Enrolment - The Education Act provides for the annulment of enrolment if the board has reasonable grounds for believing that, at the time of application, the parents provided false information or deliberately used a temporary address in an attempt to unfairly gain priority in enrolment.  Annulment is via Section 110 (1) for the following reasons:
a    although the student had an in-zone address at the time of application, the student had moved to an out-of-zone address by the time
      of  enrolment (i.e. the first day of attendance); or
b    the student had never lived at the in-zone address given at the time of application; or
c    new evidence has come to light which suggests that the student is not, in fact, the sibling of a current or former student.
